Carlsbad, CA (Dec.14, 2016) – In its first year of operations, the nation’s largest and most technologically advanced seawater desalination plant produced enough high-quality, drought-proof water from the Pacific Ocean to meet approximately 10 percent of the region’s demand. The Claude “Bud” Lewis Carlsbad Desalination Plant quickly generated significant benefits by relieving pressure on imported water supplies, reducing state mandates for emergency conservation measures in March and helping the region pass the state’s stringent water supply “stress test” in June.

Carlsbad, CA (December 15, 2015) - With Monday's ceremonial opening of the Western Hemisphere's largest ocean desalination plant, a new era began for water use in San Diego County — and possibly for the entire parched state. California officials have been emphasizing water conservation, expansion of reservoirs and water recycling (irrigating landscapes with partially treated wastewater and even turning sewage into drinking water) as prime ways to survive the drought, which is about to enter its fifth year.

Water flowing underground — Talking Heads
At Monday’s symbolic faucet-turning in Carlsbad, the mood was triumphal. Instead of emptying magnums of bubbly, however, the celebrants filled fancy plastic bottles with drinking water and carried them home as if H20 was actually Au, which in the Golden State it sort of is. Boiled down, The Bud is now North County’s No. 1 wonder. The alchemy it performs on an industrial scale, while not unique (Israel is the savvy desert guide), is rocking our world like an 8.0 earthquake.
Carlsbad, California (December 14, 2015) - Operations are under way at the nation's largest and most technologically advanced seawater desalination plant, which was dedicated today by more than 600 elected officials, community leaders and project partners. After successfully completing construction, the Claude "Bud" Lewis Carlsbad Desalination Plant has already produced more than 1.5 billion gallons of locally controlled water for San Diego County, helping to minimize the region's vulnerability to the statewide drought.
